CARLO IL VAMPIRO
Charles the Vampire is a humorous version of the vampire out of the ordinary narrative canons of these creatures. Charles is the undisputed king of the dimension that houses his kingdom, a dimension that can only be accessed through a dimensional mirror. This dimension is in contact with planet Earth due to a spell that a powerful wizard cast on the vampire. In fact Carlo, despite having kept all the powers of a super vampire, can only feed on watermelon juice, a fruit that grows only on planet Earth.
Carlo il vampiro è una versione umoristica del vampiro fuori dai comuni canoni di narrativa di queste creature. Carlo è il re incontrastato della dimensione che ospita il suo regno, una dimensione alla quale si può accedere solo tramite uno specchio dimensionale. Questa dimensione è in contatto col pianeta Terra a causa di un incantesimo che un potente mago ha lanciato al vampiro. Difatti Carlo, nonostante abbia mantenuto tutti i poteri di un super vampiro si può nutrire solo di succo di anguria, un frutto che cresce solo sul pianeta Terra.
Unfortunately I have never devoted too much attention to the development of the vast world of Charles and Aristotle, the pumpkin vampire companion of every adventure of the cursed sovereign. I only published two adventures of the vampire, they were mostly a drawn script and ink tests, but I wanted to publish it at least once. It was in 1995 in the newspaper La Voce di Mantova for which I drew cartoons and published interviews with famous authors such as Bruno Bozzetto, Bonfa, Victor Togliani, Silver, Bonvi etc… The first adventure of Carlo the Vampire: A busy night.
Purtroppo non ho mai dedicato troppa attenzione nello sviluppo del vasto mondo di Carlo e di Aristotele, la zucca vampiro compagno di ogni avventura del sovrano maledetto. Ho pubblicato due sole avventure del vampiro, erano più che altro una sceneggiatura disegnata e prove di chine, ma volevo pubblicarlo almeno una volta. Fu nel 1995 sul quotidiano La Voce di Mantova per il quale disegnavo vignette e pubblicai interviste fatte ad autori famosi come Bruno Bozzetto, Bonfa, Victor Togliani, Silver, Bonvi ecc… La prima avventura di Carlo il Vampiro: Una notte movimentata disegnata nel 1985.
Carlo’s adventures served me as an exercise for inking and in the meantime to learn how to create a script with characters and settings. In the 80s comics were made with ink, brush and nib, everything was done by hand, I think there are only a few left now who don’t use a graphic tablet. Below I want to publish the proofs, ideas and unpublished drawings of this never started saga.
Le avventure di Carlo mi servivano come esercizio per inchiostrare e nel frattempo per imparare a creare una sceneggiatura con personaggi ed ambientazioni. Negli anni ’80 i fumetti si facevano con la china, a pennello e pennino, tutto era fatto a mano, penso siano rimasti in pochi ormai a non usare una tavola grafica. Di seguito voglio pubblicare le prove, le idee e i disegni inediti di questa saga mai iniziata.
The Night of the Watermelons is the first adventure of Carlo and Aristotle on planet earth, the first expedition of the vampire to feed himself which will see him grappling with an unusual greengrocer in the Charles Bronson version in the Death Wish.
La Notte delle Angurie è la prima avventura di Carlo e Aristotele sul pianeta terra, la prima spedizione del vampiro per nutrirsi che lo vedrà alle prese con un insolito fruttivendolo in versione Charles Bronson nel Giustiziere della notte.
I continued for a while to draw scripts for this fantasy series evolving its graphics and characters, I was creating my first world and new creatures.
Ho continuato per un certo periodo a disegnare sceneggiature per questa serie fantasy evolvendone la grafica e i personaggi, stavo creando il mio primo mondo e nuove creature.
The Escapee is the third story I’ve written a script for. A very dangerous creature escapes from the kingdom and reaches an area of the island from which planet Earth can be accessed. In the second episode (of which I only drew the first panel) the escaped creature arrives in San Benedetto Po, my hometown in Italy.
L’evaso è la terza storia per la quale ho disegnato una sceneggiatura. Una pericolosissima creatura fugge dal regno e raggiunge una zona dell’isola dalla quale si può accedere al pianeta Terra. Nel secondo episodio (del quale ho disegnato solo la prima tavola) la creatura fuggita giunge a San Benedetto Po, il mio paese natale in Italia.
And in 2012, twenty years later, I felt like reprising the character, but it was only for a moment, perhaps a nostalgia for never realizing it seriously.
E nel 2012, venti anni dopo mi venne voglia di riprendere il personaggio, ma fu solo per un attimo, forse una nostalgia di non averlo mai realizzato seriamente.
I close this article on one of my dearest characters that I have created and that I have never created by publishing the drawings and the various graphic evolutions of the world of Carlo the Vampire.
